National Safe Motherhood Day is celebrated annually on April 11th in India to raise awareness about the importance of high-quality maternal health and safety. The day was established in 2003 by the Indian government, marking the birthday of Kasturba Gandhi, the wife of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the father of the nation. India became the first country in the world to dedicate a day to promoting maternal health and safety.
The White Ribbon Alliance India (WRAI), an alliance of 1,800 organizations, started the day to reduce maternal mortality rates and highlight the importance of maternal health.
Safe motherhood means ensuring that all women receive the care they need to be healthy and safe throughout pregnancy and childbirth. The "four pillars" of safe motherhood are: family planning and antenatal care.
