The Eco-Park in Action Area II of New Town is one of the largest open spaces in the city.
The
site is spread across an area of 194 hectares (480 acres) and includes a
42-hectare (100 acres) water body with an island. The Central Business District
(CBD) is located to the east of the site and one of the largest convention
centres in the country, Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, has been built to its
north.
The
master plan for the Eco-Park has been prepared with the intent to balance its
role as a city level recreational open space, with the need for the park to
help mitigate some of the adverse impacts of urbanization of the surrounding
area. The Eco-Park has been developed to re-establish a healthy self-sustaining
eco-system.
Inception
On
19th July, 2011, Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, on her
way from the airport, got down near the water body by the side of New Town
M.A.R and the idea was born.
With
her vision of sustainable development, the 480 acres of land containing and
surrounding the water body was declared to be converted into an ecological
garden – the first of its kind in the Eastern region of India.
Subsequently,
WBHIDCO initiated the process of developing this new dream called the ‘Eco
Park.
This
Eco Tourism Park was inaugurated by Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Smt
Mamata Banerjee on 29th December, 2012. Since 1st January, 2013, the Eco Park
has been opened for visitors. The park remains closed on all Mondays for
maintenance.
Why have an Eco-Park at New Town?
The
vision for the new Eco-Park at New Town embraces a holistic and systematic
approach to sustainability that seeks to create a balance between ecological
regeneration, resource conservation, and optimization with the need to create a
recreational urban open space.
This
approach offers an additional benefit as compared to traditional models for
developing parks and urban open spaces – the chance to create a “living
classroom” about nature’s service. People can come here to relax or rejuvenate,
socialize or seek solitude, and learn first-hand how the region's flora and
fauna benefit their city, as the wetlands filter water and the plants filter
air. It provides a perfect work-life balance.
