The list is endless for childhood places and the memories built around it. Kharagpur was just that beloved city where the memories linger long after one has left for other abodes.
The first is the home I grew up in:
Timeless memories circle around my head.
My parents, relatives, neighbors, friends, school the school teachers.
Then come the feelings:
Listening to the radio, reading books, walking to libraries, eating at fabulous restaurants, like Waldorf and Far east.
Then comes the childhood places you visited numerous times:
Paying obeisance to temples and churches.
One was the Kali Temple. The goddess Kali looked gigantic with her golden tongue out, mischievous grin in a child’s eyes.
And the church at Sacred Heart with its quietude and hushed silence. Jesus Christ at the cross solemnised a child’s faith.
Going to the ”Cinema Cinema” greatest entertainment!
Some went to the movies to get away from the oppressive heat and humidity of KGP.
Some went to romance. Some went to block their reality of life.
I went for sheer entertainment.
Going inside the cold cinema hall to ward off the heat of summertime at Kharagpur.
The mammoth drapes that covered the screen. The halls had ornate seats.
The thrill when in the dark hall the curtains swished apart to show the lion roaring inside the MGM emblem .
It was too good to even describe.
Getting lost with Maria in Sound of Music. Flying kites with Mary Poppins.
Getting lost with Eliza Doolittle with “I could have danced all night”.
Roaming with lions in Born Free.
Going on a train ride with Uttam Kumar and Sharmila Tagore in Nayak.
Crying with Babumoshai in Anand and “ Kaheko roye. Safal hogi teri Aradhana”.
Childhood places also were: Walking into the railway garden and wandering around rows of trees. The smell of fresh water on the mud. Heady for me.
Walking up and down the roads in the railway colony and down to the market (Goal Bazar).
Or just strolling soaking up the sights the sounds the smells.
Sauntering in and out of the narrow pathways of the Market.
Sometimes even going to Kosai River just for a swim.
I’ll give this Childhood Place a rest now.. it never ends.. those favourite things.
