Heating Problems and Solutions

Hello! I am Hylton Upshon, working at Heat-Well, an upcoming Heat-mapping Company in New Delhi. Do you know where your insulation gaps are? As the winter months arrive and much of Northern India braces itself for icy weather, we take to the streets to let homeowners know exactly where their heating expenses are escaping. We provide suggestions about how to make your homes more energy efficient. We drive around as many streets as possible, taking pictures of people’s homes in our SUV, equipped with infrared cameras, heat-mapping whatever homes are visible on both sides of the street.

The photos give a quick assessment of each structure’s thermal envelope and highlight areas where heat is escaping into the outside air. In blobs of colour ranging from black-coldest-to purple, orange and yellow which is the hottest, the images can be used as a thermal map to prioritize areas that need extra insulation, usually around windows, eaves and spaces between floors. The images are then processed on the company’s software and stored on a secure server. Homeowners can then type in their addresses to see if their homes have been covered and get a free assessment.

Heat-Well can then recommend local insulation companies, window installers etc. that can provide fittings to help plug the gaps. The only challenge that we face is the concern for privacy, expressed by the people, but we at Heat-Well insist that our cameras cannot see through walls or windows. So it is impossible to see people or objects inside the buildings. Also, the images are stored on a secure server and homeowners can also opt out of the program and have the photos deleted at their request.

It can be proved that about 50 per cent of household energy waste results from breaches in a home’s heat envelope. The company estimates that residential buildings can easily save Rupees 37,000 to 75,000 per year.

World Autism Awareness Day

World Autism Awareness Day is an internationally recognized day annually on April 2, encouraging Member States of the United Nations to take measures to raise awareness about autistic individuals throughout the world. It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly resolution (A/RES/62/139)., passed in council on November 1, 2007, and adopted on December 18, 2007. It was proposed by Moza bint Nasser Al-Missned, the United Nations Representative from Qatar, and supported by all member states. This resolution was passed and adopted without a vote in the UN General Assembly, mainly as a supplement to previous UN initiatives to improve human rights. World Autism Day is one of only seven official health-specific UN Days. The terms "Autism Awareness Day" and "Autism Awareness Month" are often contested by autism rights advocates, who claim that they feed into ableism against au...

Indira Gandhi

Indira Gandhi, the second from her lineage to have wielded the position of Head of State, is the only woman to have been elected as the Prime Minister in India to date. With a long-standing political career, she served close to four terms as India’s Prime Minister from 1966-1977 and then again from 1980-1984.  Born on November 19, 1917, as Indira Priyadarshani Nehru, she was the only daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. Born into a family of freedom fighters and political leaders, her entire life was spent in the realm of politics.  Indira Gandhi boasted an illustrious educational background. She studied at some of the most prominent institutions, both domestic and foreign. Her academic years were spent at Ecole Nouvelle, Bex (Switzerland), Ecole Internationale in Geneva, Pupils’ Own School in Pune and Mumbai, Badminton School in Bristol, Vishwa Bharati, Shantiniketan and Somerville College of Oxford University. She became inquisitive about p...

The Mariana Trench

After going to a depth of two hundred meters or about six hundred and fifty feet from the surface of the sea, a different world was seen which descended into the abyssal plain. Until today it was believed that the abyss extends to a depth of six thousand meters or about nineteen thousand six hundred and eighty five feet. But today that perception has changed. The Mariana Trench is believed to be a wonder that has gone down to eleven thousand meters i.e. about thirty six thousand feet below the ocean floor. These regions are isolated due to darkness and high pressure. I don't know how many mysteries are hidden about the unique life created by the geological and biological evolution of the Earth...
