You are holding a cup of tea when someone comes along and bumps into you or shakes your arm, making you spill your tea everywhere.
Why did you spill the tea?
"Because
someone bumped into me!!!"
Wrong answer.
You spilt the tea because there was tea in your cup.
Had
there been lemonade in the cup, you would have spilt lemonade.
Whatever is inside the cup is what will spill out.
Therefore, when life comes along and shakes you (which WILL happen), whatever is inside you will come out. It's easy to fake it until you get rattled.
So we have to ask ourselves... "what's in my cup?"
- When life gets tough, what spills over?
- Joy, gratefulness, peace and humility?
- Anger, bitterness, harsh words and reactions?
Life provides the cup, YOU choose how to fill it.
Today let's work towards filling our cups with gratitude, forgiveness, joy, words of affirmation; and kindness, gentleness and love for others.
Life is very much like holding a cup — what you fill it with is what will spill out when you’re shaken. If your cup is filled with tea and someone bumps into you, tea will spill. If it were lemonade, lemonade would spill instead. In the same way, when life shakes us with challenges, pressures, or unexpected problems, whatever is truly inside us will come out. We might be able to pretend or act calm on the surface, but the real contents of our inner self are revealed in those testing moments.
This makes it important to pause and ask ourselves: what’s in my cup? Do we carry joy, gratefulness, peace, and humility within us, or do we let anger, bitterness, and harshness take root? Life will always provide the cup, but it’s up to us to decide what to pour into it. By choosing gratitude, forgiveness, kindness, gentleness, and love, we prepare ourselves to respond gracefully when life shakes us. Let’s work every day to fill our cups with goodness so that what spills out blesses both us and the people around us.
