1851 Colonial India, West Bengal 'A bhur on the circular canal, Calcutta.' A rare photograph of an industrial district in Calcutta is vividly described in the book ''Calcutta the City Revealed' by Geoffrey Moorehouse. Moorehouse compared these industrial districts with those in the northern cities of Victorian Britain, such as Manchester. The circular canal ran to the east and north of the city, draining the salt lake and finally connecting with the River Hooghly at Chitpore. Photographer - Frederick Fiebig.
