World Asteroid Day

What Is International Asteroid Day? International Asteroid Day is a global event dedicated to educating the public about asteroids, their impact on Earth, and the ways we can protect our planet from potential asteroid threats. It serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and scientific advancement in monitoring the skies.   Why Is June 30 an Asteroid Day? June 30th was chosen to mark International Asteroid Day because it commemorates the Tunguska event, the most significant asteroid impact in recent history, which devastated over 2,000 square kilometers of forest in Siberia on this day in 1908. On this day in 1908, a massive explosion occurred in Siberia, believed to be caused by an asteroid or comet exploding in the atmosphere. This event released the energy equivalent of up to 15 million tons of TNT, flattening around 2,000 square kilometers of forest and knocking down 80 million trees. Despite occurring in a remote area, the explosion had global atmospheric eff...

Dynamic Bats

Bats look like a small brown mouse. They have a fox like muzzle large ears and a neck, which is short and well covered with fur. They are flying mammals. They can fly but they are not birds. They do not have feathers on their wings like birds Instead, they have double layers of skin stretched over their bones There are nearly a thousand different kinds of bats which vary in size. The largest bat has been recorded as having a wing span of over 150 cm. But most bats are small creatures with rather large wings. They often live in caves where there may be thousands of them crowded together on the walls and ceiling. Smaller bat colonies of up to twelve bats may live together inside a hollow cave. The...

These coins stopped a bullet and saved a soldier's life

These coins both endangered and saved the life of a soldier in World War One. Shot after the noise of them "clinging together in his breast pocket... gave his position away... the bullet that should have killed him ricocheted off of the coins thus saving his life". Optatius Buyssens's great-grandson Vincent posted a photo of the coins on Reddit and it received more than 130,000 upvotes in 24 hours. The digital strategist, 28, of Antwerp, has never had such a popular post. "He got kicked in the head by the German soldier who shot him but tricked the soldier into thinking he was dead," Vincent adds. "When the German soldier left, he and another wounded comrade managed to crawl to safety." Optatius had a medical condition that initially barred him from joining the Belgian army. But he eventually managed to volunteer and was shot, according to Vincent's dad and Optatius's grandson, Phillippe, on 26 September 1914, in the Belgian town of...

Forgotten Muslim soldiers of World War One 'silence' far right

A hundred years since the end of World War One, historians think recognising the contribution of Muslims can help tackle contemporary issues such as Islamophobia. "Muslim soldiers have been forgotten about over time," Hayyan Bhabha, from the Muslim Experience, says. "The core far-right narrative is that Muslims have never done anything for us. "Well, actually, with facts that are over 100 years old, we can say Muslims fought and died for the history and security of Europe." It is estimated that 1.5 million Indian troops fought to defend Britain. Of those, 400,000 were Muslim soldiers. The Muslim Experience is working to highlight the global contribution of Muslim soldiers to World War One and says raising awareness could silence anti-Muslim rhetoric by far-right groups in Britain today. Mr Bhabha says his team is now opening up documents and discovering new information about their role in the War. "Accessing archives from 19 countries, we have ...
